Autism & Friendships

Making and keeping friends as a young Autistic person can feel like a puzzle sometimes, especially when social rules seem unspoken or confusing. If you’re a young person trying to make and keep friends, you’re not alone—many of us have been there!

Here are a few things that might help:

✨ Find Your People – Not everyone will understand or appreciate you, and that’s okay. Focus on those who share your interests and respect your boundaries. Hobbies, online communities, and special interest groups can be great places to start.

🗣️ Communicate Your Needs – It’s okay to tell people how you like to socialise. Maybe you prefer 1 on 1 conversations over big group hangouts, or you need breaks during social time. Real friends will understand and respect that.

🤝 Practice Small Steps – Friendship isn’t about grand gestures; it’s built on small moments. A simple check-in message, remembering something they like, or sharing an experience together strengthens bonds over time.

💙 Be Kind to Yourself – Socializing can be exhausting, and it’s okay to take breaks. You don’t have to change who you are to make friends—being yourself is your greatest strength.

Friendships may take time, but the right people will see and appreciate you for who you are. Keep being you!
